How to Apostille Indian Documents While Living Abroad
You do not need to fly to India. Here is how the process works when your documents travel by courier instead of you.
Read the guideOne MEA apostille sticker, accepted throughout the UK. No embassy attestation needed.
Hague Convention — apostille only
The United Kingdom is a Hague Convention member, which makes this one of the simpler destinations. After state verification, the Ministry of External Affairs applies an apostille sticker, and the document is ready. There is no British High Commission step and no further legalisation.
Most of our UK work is students heading to British universities, professionals on Skilled Worker visas, and families registering marriages or births. UK universities and the Home Office both accept an Indian apostille directly.
One thing worth planning around: UK visa applications often have tight deadlines, and educational documents needing HRD verification can take two to three weeks before they even reach the MEA. Start earlier than feels necessary.
3–15 working days, depending on document type. We confirm an exact estimate for your specific document and issuing state before you commit.
Both countries are parties to the Hague Apostille Convention — the United Kingdom since 1965, India since 14 July 2005 (HCCH status table, checked September 2026). That membership is what removes the embassy step. An MEA apostille is the finished article for the UK, and there is nothing for the British High Commission in New Delhi to add to it.
The same rule works in the other direction, which catches people out. The UK’s Legalisation Office handles British documents only; its guidance states that documents issued outside the UK cannot be legalised through that service and must be legalised in the country that issued them (UK government). An Indian degree cannot be apostilled in London. It has to be done here, before it travels.
An apostille confirms that the signature and seal on your certificate are genuine. It says nothing about what the qualification is worth in British terms, and UK employers, universities and professional bodies often want that judged separately.
The UK national agency for that is Ecctis (formerly UK NARIC). Its Statement of Comparability sets an Indian qualification against the UK framework; the published turnaround is 15 working days once everything has been received, and certified translations are required where documents were not issued in English. It is a separate exercise from attestation and neither one replaces the other.
Educational documents are the long pole. State HRD verification means the department writes to your university and waits for a written reply, and that reply is the largest variable in the whole timeline — days at some universities, weeks at others. Personal documents such as birth and marriage certificates skip HRD altogether and are authenticated by the Home Department or an SDM, which is why they finish sooner.
Police clearance certificates are the exception to starting early. Many authorities will not accept a PCC more than three to six months old, so one apostilled far ahead of your application can expire before it is used.
The UK is the simplest and cheapest case. It is a Hague Convention country, so there is no embassy stage at all: your document needs state authentication and then a single MEA apostille sticker. Two stages instead of four.
Almost all the variation is in the document type. A degree requires HRD verification, which means writing to your university and waiting — and a few universities charge for the confirmation. A birth or marriage certificate goes through SDM or the Home Department and avoids that entirely.
The other factors are simple: how many documents you have, and whether you want them couriered back to a UK address. Most of our UK clients never come to India at all, so the return courier is usually the second largest line after the work itself.
Send us the list and we will quote it properly, with the government charge shown separately from our fee.

Read the guideYes. The United Kingdom is a Hague Convention member, so an apostille issued by India's Ministry of External Affairs is accepted directly, with no further legalisation.
No. That is the advantage of apostille. Once the MEA sticker is applied, the document is ready to use in the UK.
The apostille does not expire. However, the Home Office often requires that a police clearance certificate be recent, typically within six months, regardless of the apostille.
Yes, and it is the normal requirement. Degree certificates and transcripts are apostilled after HRD verification by the issuing state.
