Apostille for Italy

Italy is a Hague Convention member, so an apostille from the Ministry of External Affairs is sufficient legalisation. What catches people out is that the apostille alone is rarely enough in practice.

Italian authorities almost always require documents to be presented in Italian, with a certified translation that is itself legalised. For educational documents there is often a further requirement: a Dichiarazione di Valore, or declaration of value, issued by the Italian Embassy, which states what your qualification is worth in the Italian system.

Apostille first, then the part people miss

Italy has been a party to the Hague Apostille Convention since 1978 and India since 14 July 2005 (HCCH status table, checked September 2026), so your certificate itself needs an MEA apostille and no Italian embassy stamp.

For study, though, the apostille is only half the job. Italian universities generally ask for a Declaration of Value — the dichiarazione di valore — issued by the Italian mission whose jurisdiction covers the state where your qualification was awarded. It describes the qualification and the length of study, so the Italian institution can place it in their system. It is issued by the mission, not by us, and the requirements below are theirs.

HRD, not SDM — the mistake that costs a month

This is the single most expensive error we see on Italy files. The Italian Embassy in New Delhi requires degree certificates to carry HRD authentication from the Regional Authentication Centre of the issuing state, and states that an SDM stamp is not accepted, along with the MEA apostille and copies.

An SDM stamp is faster and cheaper than HRD verification, which is exactly why agencies use it for personal documents. Used on a degree headed for Italy, the file comes back and the HRD stage has to be done anyway — after the certificate has already travelled to Delhi and back. Translations, names, and the pre-enrolment portal

Documents are translated into Italian, and the Italian missions publish their own lists of accepted translators — a translation from outside that list can be refused. The mission also expects the name on your passport to match the name on your degree, mark sheets and transcripts; where it does not, a “one and the same person” certificate from the competent authority is required.

For a study visa there is also the pre-enrolment step on Universitaly, the official portal, and an acceptance letter from the Italian institution. Declarations of Value are issued for verified study purposes, and applications are made in person through the mission’s channels rather than by post.

Which mission covers you

Italy runs consulates in Mumbai and Bengaluru as well as the embassy in New Delhi, and each covers particular Indian states with its own current checklist. The mission that matters is the one covering the state that issued your qualification, not the one nearest your home.

What affects the cost of an Italian apostille

Italy is a Hague Convention country, so the attestation itself is short: state authentication, then a single MEA apostille. There is no Italian embassy stage.

What makes Italy different from the UK or the US is translation. Italian authorities generally want documents in Italian, and a certified translation is usually a separate cost from the attestation — priced per page, so a multi-page transcript costs more than a single certificate. Whether the translation itself also needs legalising depends on who is asking for it, which is worth establishing before anything is translated.

The attestation side follows the usual pattern: degrees carry HRD verification with your university and take longer; personal documents go through SDM or the Home Department.
